Walking or Riding? Do your bit for road safety.
Tips for motorcyclists and riders:
- Being correct wont necessarily keep you alive; your riding will be more enjoyable and longer lasting by better anticipating hazardous situations and taking action early to avoid them altogether
- Plan your journey to avoid road works, black spots, wet tram tracks and other known hazards that make your job harder and take the fun out of riding
- Learn to control your riding so you avoid sitting in another driver’s blind spots or obscured by the back pillar of a car’s rear window!
- Respect the extra acceleration you may have compared with other vehicles; don’t accelerate into a more hazardous situation
Tips for pedestrians:
- Obey traffic signals particularly in the city; not doing so can increase congestion in built-up areas when crossings are flooded for the entire traffic signal cycle
- Wear light colored clothing or a reflective backpack at night to increase your visibility, particularly out of town you can quickly become invisible
- Be mindful of other road users; don’t take an unnecessarily long time to cross a road even if you have right of way – most of us rely on the road network to get safely from A to B in a reasonable time
- Avoid walking on the road. If you must walk on a road due to the lack of a footpath for any length, always face the traffic so you can see what’s going on.
