So you’re a licensed driver. Why should you consider further driver training?
Advanced or defensive driver training can:
- Help you to keep yourself and your family safe, as well as other road users
- Give you a better control of your vehicle in an emergency
- Teach you to assess and progress your own driving skills to a professional level
- Help you to manage the stress associated with driving in heavy traffic or poor conditions by giving you a better understanding of your vehicle’s capabilities
- Give you the attitude and skills to be a positive role model for new drivers
- Help construct a safer, more positive environment on our roads
- Provide the opportunity for reduced insurance premiums
Last but not least, driver training beyond your license can be fun!
What is advanced driver training?
Advanced driving, defensive driving, low risk driving – all these terms and others have been used to describe behaviors and skills that aim to make better, safer drivers.
Courses may include things such as:
- Better hazard perception ability
- Vehicle control skills
- Skid avoidance and control
- Attitude and responsibility
Courses in advanced driving are a usual requirement for drivers of emergency vehicles (police, ambulance and fire departments.) Drivers who must respond frequently to stressful situations quickly and effectively, and without creating another incident on their way. These are arguably some of the safest drivers on our roads.
These safety skills are not often taught adequately in standard driving lessons. And even if they were, without time to put these skills into practice drivers cannot possibly take full advantage of their training.
Advanced driver training provides all drivers the opportunity to incrementally improve their driving and foster a safer, more positive road environment for everyone.
